Covered states

Every state we recover unclaimed property in.

Counterfoil Capital maintains a state-level recovery playbook for every state whose unclaimed-property inventory is large enough to make filing-specific work worthwhile. Each hub below lays out the holding agency, the proof-of-identification checklist, the disbursement timeline, and the questions that state’s claimants ask first.

Why state-specific

A state playbook, not a generic search.

The free public databases surface that a record exists. They do not prepare the state-specific affidavit, prove a prior address, satisfy the agency’s heirship and identification checklist, or follow up when the agency’s response is overdue. Each state has its own filing regime; the work below is the procedural payoff that follows the database match.

7 states covered, with a worked playbook for each.

Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts
Texas unclaimed property.
Texas routinely reports the largest single-state pool of dormant unclaimed property in the U.S., and the Texas Comptroller publishes the entire inventory in a single public portal rather than splitting it across counties. The volume and the unified portal are why we built the first state-level recovery playbook around it.

NYS Office of the State Comptroller (OSC)
New York unclaimed property.
Dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities for New York residents are held by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller, which publishes the inventory in a single statewide portal. The OSC’s proof-of-identification checklist and its rules on paid finders are what govern the procedural work on a New York claim.

California State Controller’s Office (SCO)
California unclaimed property.
The California State Controller’s Office holds dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities for California residents in a single statewide portal. California’s high-population base combined with the SCO’s specific submission checklist is what makes the state-level filing work materially different here.

Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS)
Florida unclaimed property.
The Florida DFS / MyfloridaCFO.com portal holds dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities for Florida residents. The DFS proof-of-identification checklist governs what a complete Florida claim package looks like on first review.

Illinois State Treasurer’s Office (icash.illinois.gov)
Illinois unclaimed property.
The Illinois State Treasurer operates icash.illinois.gov, the statewide portal for dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities. Chicago-metro financial-services volume is what concentrates the bulk of dormant Illinois records.

Pennsylvania Treasury Department (patreasury.gov)
Pennsylvania unclaimed property.
The Pennsylvania Treasury Department holds dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities for Pennsylvania residents, published through the patreasury.gov portal. Philadelphia- and Pittsburgh-area financial-services and industrial-employer volume drives the bulk of Pennsylvania’s dormant-property pool.

Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds (unclaimed.ohio.gov)
Ohio unclaimed property.
The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds holds dormant accounts, uncashed checks, and reverted securities for Ohio residents through unclaimed.ohio.gov. Ohio’s identity, prior-address, relationship-document, and Professional Finder requirements shape what a complete claim package looks like on first review.
